What is a herniated disc? A herniated disc is the rupturing of the tissue that separates the vertebral bones of the spinal column. A herniated disc can irritate nearby nerves, resulting in pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg. It is also possible that people experience little to no symptoms, so every case tends to vary. Most herniated discs tend to occur in the lower back, lumbar spine, but it can also occur in your neck, cervical spine. It’s important that you seek medical attention when you believe you may have a herniated disc.

When you have a herniated disc, most of the time it will start to improve on its own within a few weeks, but there are other treatments to help alleviate your pain. The most important thing to do when you have a herniated disc is to rest. Rest can relieve swelling and give your back time to properly heal. In addition to rest, over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen or similar drugs can help relieve the pain as well as bring down the swelling. Also, there are some exercises that can help improve your symptoms. In these cases, it is best to consult with one of our physicians.
