Stenosis is caused by a degenerative change in the intervertebral discs and joint of the spine, and may be from narrowing of the spinal canal space or from a combination of changes. Spinal stenosis occurs mostly in people who are 50 years or older, but it is possible that younger people who have experienced a spine injury or have a narrow spinal canal are at risk as well. It is also possible that both arthritis and scoliosis can cause spinal stenosis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for spinal stenosis, but there are treatments that are structured to help relieve symptoms. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help ease swelling and pain. There are some cases where receiving cortisone shots can significantly ease the inflammation and pain as well. Another form of treatment is exercise. Even though you may feel like you’re in too much pain to exercise, movement is crucial to your overall health.
