Lower back pain is a very common occurrence among people of all ages. Men and women, boys and girls, are all prone to developing back problems. The older we get, the more at risk we become in developing back problems. First, we have to ask "How?" and "Why?" do back problems occur.
There are many different reasons that someone could experience back pain. From tight muscles to spinal stenosis and sciatica. In the cases of spinal stenosis and sciatica, the resulting pain is due to the sciatic nerve being agitated. Whether that agitation comes from a bulged disc or the narrowing space within your spine, you are likely to feel lower back pain that radiates down into the legs.
When asking how these problems occur, there are some answers that are more obvious than others. For example, a person who suffers a traumatic injury from say, a car accident or sports injury, will have a more identifiable cause of their back pain. However, there are cases where not one single event is the main cause of the problem, but perhaps the "straw that broke the camel's back". For example, a healthy, active individual could all the sudden one-day experience back pain, seemingly out of nowhere. This could be attributed to years and years of bad posture until one day the disc faces too much pressure and it bulges out and affects the nerve. The key is whether or not the nerve is affected. There are many cases where people have bulged discs that do not affect the nerve, so the person never truly experiences back pain in the manner that someone with an affected nerve would.
Depending on the condition or severity of lower back pain you have, physical therapy could be a great way to work towards a life with less pain. We cannot sit still and let the back become weak. We must work diligently to strengthen the areas around the spine to support good posture. We understand that there are specific movements that are irritating to our patients, which is why we work with them closely to find out what their limitations are and how we can work around them while strengthening the body's core. For chronic back pain that is affecting your everyday life, you may be a candidate for new and innovative restorative medicine options which can provide you the healing you need.
